Joan Cabanilles Keyboard Music: Volume Two
Much of the music of Joan (or Juan) Cabanilles (1644–1712) is as virtuosic and colourfully Baroque as that of his northern contemporary, Dietrich Buxtehude, though it is also touched with a distinctively Spanish intensity. He is claimed as the most prolific of all composers for the organ, and publication of his works, begun in 1927, is still under way. This is the second in an ongoing series of recordings designed to restore a great Valencian master to his unique glory.

*FIRST RECORDINGS

MusicWeb International :
‘it’s just as recommendable [as volume 1], with equally fine playing from Timothy Roberts […]
Though made in different locations and at different times, the recordings are very good. […]
Volume 2 of the latter, like its predecessor, leaves me hoping for more Cabanilles from this source.’

MusicWeb International :
‘From his youth Roberts was fascinated by Spanish keyboard music and has studied it thoroughly. That shows in his fully idiomatic and engaging performances. In addition, these discs come with very informative booklets. Not only do we read much about Spanish organ music and Cabanilles’ oeuvre in particular, they also include analyses of every single piece.
Undoubtedly this is a project of great importance, and the quality of music, instrument and interpreter makes me look forward to the next volumes.’

musica Dei donum :
‘I was impressed by the performances at the first two volumes, and I am again very happy with what we get here. Timothy Roberts has studied this repertoire thoroughly, and is an excellent guide in this rather unknown territory. He has the assistance of three excellent instruments, which through pitch and temperament are perfectly suited to do justice to Cabanilles’ art. No organ lover should miss this disc, and those who have the previous volumes undoubtedly have looked forward to this sequel. I hope that we will see the fourth volume very soon.’

Opus Klassiek :
English translation:
‘With all due respect to Stoffel van Viegen, I think Roberts’ interpretation and the organ do Cabanilles’ music much more justice.
Cabanilles played more keyboard instruments. It’s debatable whether he consciously composed for these instruments. Two works on this CD are performed on a harpsichord. Beautiful, but to my ears, it sounds a bit off after 70 minutes of organ. But that’s the only blemish on this excellent CD.’
