Hendrik Andriessen: Piano Music
Although much of the music of the Dutch composer Hendrik Andriessen (1892–1981) has now been explored in recordings, his works for piano largely remain to be discovered. This first conspectus of his piano music covers fifty years of composition, showing how early influences – among them Bach, Brahms, Franck, Hindemith and Ravel – were subsumed into a musical language distinguished by its textural clarity and harmonic warmth.

FIRST RECORDINGS

Art Music Lounge :
‘The [first sonata] is exceptionally well crafted; there is real meat on its bones, and Nydegger plays it with rapt attention and complete conviction. […]
[The Convex Looking-Glass], too, is played by Nydegger with great sensitivity. […]
Quite an interesting album of music!’

Klassisk Mussikk :
‘Pianisten Jacob Nydegger fra Texas synes å være fullt på høyden med Andriessens komplekse og forskjelligartede idiom og variasjoner i kompositoriske virkemidler. Hans spill har en enorm flyt og tolkningene er svært gjennomtenkte. Toccatas lyd er lojal, og klar og om akustikken er litt tørr, forhindrer det ikke at dette er en veldig god CD. Anbefales? Å jada.’
English tranlation:
‘Pianist Jacob Nydegger from Texas seems to be fully up to the task of Andriessen’s complex and diverse idiom and variations in compositional devices. His playing has an enormous flow and the interpretations are very well thought out. Toccata’s sound is loyal and clear and if the acoustics are a bit dry, it doesn’t prevent this from being a very good CD. Recommended? Oh sure.’
